Camera Lucida: new perspectives on teaching drawing

Camera Lucida: new perspectives on teaching drawing provides an opportunity to formally introduce and launch the now written, approved and piloted UAL Drawing Qualification. The conference will also explore the national context for the teaching and learning of drawing, and speakers from Further Education and Facial Anthropology will explore the wider role of visual intelligence and learning through drawing.

During last year, funded by the Rick Hopkins Bequest, The Centre for Drawing worked with the UAL Awarding body to write a course that could become either a part of Additional Specialist Learning (ASL) within the new 14-19 Diplomas, or additionality to other Art & Design provision al Level 2, 3 and 4 (including the UAL Foundation Diploma in Art & Design) with a view to eventually becoming a stand alone qualification.

The course was written in response to the need for degree course applicants to not only develop better drawing skills, but also have the ability to connect those skills to other forms of literacy, enquiry and communication. It is as a result anticipated that the course will not only advantage art and design applicants but also a broad range of courses where visual intelligence and communication skills are valued.
