Drawn Encounters is the fourth exhibition organised by the gallery at Wimbledon in conjunction with The Centre for Drawing UAL. The gallery has a commitment to the development of exhibitions that inform the research culture of the College, in the subjects of Fine Art, Theatre and Drawing

Drawn Encounters has been originated to complement Drawn Encounters, Complex Identities, a two-day conference jointly arranged in collaboration with Monash University, Australia, to be held at The British School at Rome on 17th and 18th September 2008. Both conference and exhibition have grown organically from a series of exchanges between researchers in The Centre for Drawing UAL and their Australian counterparts which have explored the nature and value of drawing as a means to document, encounter and exchange experiences of place, landscape and identity. Drawn Encounters, the exhibition, examines this inter-change between the UK and Australia as an inspirational source for thematic enquiry through drawing.

Artists continue to use drawing to document and examine their experiences of location, travel, identity, disjuncture and cultural context. The drawings in this show are emphatically about encountering the present through the lens of cultural heritage. From Melanie Jackson’s virtual ‘Road Trip to Darwin’ to Tom Nicholson’s fleeting memorial of the historic encounter of William Buckley and the English prospectors led by John Batman, the drawings document both specific and culturally redolent events alongside the documentation of place.

“This exhibition evidences the vitality of drawing as a means by which artists continue to record, document and digest the world as they experience it in order to gain and share knowledge and understanding.” Professor Anita Taylor, Director of The Centre for Drawing UAL

Papers from the related Drawn Encounters, Complex identitiesconference will be streamed live into Wimbledon College of Art from The British School at Rome on the 17th and 18th September 2008.
