Working primarily in photography and installation, an interest in drawing and spatial exploration pervades Russell Chater’s practice. The sources for his current artworks are existing high street shop windows. He exploits the formal language of display, such as the plinth and neon lighting to construct new imagery which cross the boundaries of fine art, fashion, style and theatre design. A key interest is the visual vocabulary of drawing to investigate spatial depiction; the grid, view and vanishing point, as well as the evocation of more abstract ideas, such as the infinite and the void. Russell’s compelling works ‘stage’ contained spaces whilst at the same time suggesting the ‘between’ and ‘beyond’.

The Forum for Drawing seeks to nurture a broad interpretation of drawing from hands-on pencil on paper to the digital, video and performance within the context of creative practice at London College of Fashion. It aims to foster dialogue between staff, researchers and interested students, where informal presentations of work can precipitate discussion and ideas can be exchanged. Colleagues from throughout the University are welcome.
