Centre for Drawing Project Space

Anna Chapman - Soundmarks mixed media, projection, sound, 2008

The aim of the Centre for Drawing’s Project Space is to explore a broad range of attitudes tohowdrawing figures in art practice. For example, first and foremost it can be seen as a stand-alone activity that references notions of process, representation, description and language; secondly, as part of a multidisciplinary practice; thirdly, as a tool and complement to other disciplines; and fourthly as a means of expanding the discursive and inventive arena of thought processes that are at the heart of all creative work.

As a site that is part studio, part exhibition space, the present function of the Centre for Drawing Project Space is to encourage a discourse and exchange between postgraduate students, fine art researchers and artists from both within the School community as well as invited researchers and artists.

This year a programme of residencies, artist’s presentations, group discussions and seminars have been established to facilitate not only individual and group projects but also collaborations not specifically geared to the conventions of exhibitions which can suggest new and unexpected arenas for exploration and research. In that sense the site of the Centre for Drawing will be fulfilling the criteria of a project space –an open ended place of dialogue, debate and research that interrogates both process and product.
